Meet Rose – Dynamic, Personable, Tenacious, Joint Chair of ABPCO and Passionate Conference and Events Professional
Rose had a particularly varied journey to her current role
as leader of Opening Doors & Venues, the Midlands-based conference and
events agency dedicated to exceeding your expectations.
Rose’s career path involved time spent as a nursery nurse, a
period in sales, marketing and PR and a lifelong involvement with amateur
theatre – which resulted in producing a 3 night amdram production of ‘Jesus
Christ Superstar’ in her local church! Rose has certainly led an eventful
worklife!
In 2000, Rose was persuaded by a friend to become involved
in the organisation of a 2-day conference for Age Concern. Ultimately, Rose
assumed the role of overall project manager. The event was a massive success
and led to Rose founding the thriving agency that we see today.
In 2015, Opening Doors & Venues was winner of the ABPCO
Excellence Award for Best Agency Conference Organiser, a proud moment for Rose
indeed. ABPCO is the Association of British Professional Conference
Organisers, the UK’s leading professional body for association conference &
not-for-profit event organisation.
Furthermore, following the award, Rose was invited to become
a member of the ABPCO Executive Committee. The Executive committee are responsible,
in conjunction with the Association Director, for the general running of the
Association and also represent the interests of the Association to all
appropriate Government agencies, industry bodies, and the media.
Moreover, last year Rose was made co-Chair of ABPCO - a
great honour, and another challenge for Rose to “get her teeth into”! It is
particularly rewarding role to tackle in 2017, as ABPCO celebrates its 30th year.
On 8th December, Rose is truly looking forward to co-hosting the ABPCO
Chairmen’s Lunch and Excellence Awards.
Rose is aiming to utilise her position at this time to
highlight a concept which is close to her heart – the nurturing of event
professionals. An EventWell survey recently showed that over a third of event
professionals have experienced mental health issues. This did not surprise Rose
who, as a seasoned conference organiser, has experienced the relentless
pressure involved in professional event management. Furthermore, as the line
manager of two event staff, Rose is keen to ensure they don’t suffer in respect
of this. Therefore, alongside peer-to-peer support, Rose wants to see more
pastoral mentoring of junior event managers as they come up through the ranks.
Rose finds acting as a mentor to her staff is also personally rewarding, and
hopes to encourage others in a similar position to do the same.
Finally, Rose appeared on the expert panel at the clic+
conference, an exhibition for event professionals, which took place on 24th November
at the University of Cambridge (for more details http://www.robinson.cam.ac.uk/conferences/clic-events/clic-annual-event).
Rose shared her experiences and views on the increasing importance of
face-to-face events in a digital age.
